This is another entry in my ongoing “songs that visited me and decided they wanted to stay” series. I hope you like these enough to become a paid subscriber, because I really need you to keep this series going…
Wichita Lineman - Glen Campbell
And I need you more than want you
And I want you for all time
And the Wichita lineman
Is still on the line
It was written to order. Campbell wanted what he called another “geographical” song to follow up “By the Time I Get to Phoenix”. Mere hours after asking for it, he had it. But the song wasn’t done. Songwriter Jimmy Webb thought it needed a third verse and perhaps a bridge, so he was more than a little surprised when Campbell casually mentioned a few weeks later that it was already recorded. In such ways pop history is made.
