Who Knows Where the Time Goes? - Sandy Denny / Fairport Convention

Sad, deserted shore
Your fickle friends are leaving
Ah, but then you know
It's time for them to go

But I will still be here
I have no thought of leaving
I do not count the time

For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?

The only outside singer ever allowed on a Led Zeppelin record, Sandy Denny fought Robert Plant to a draw in “The Battle of Evermore”. She was an enormous personality who joined the boys club of Fairport Convention, and gave that seminal band some of their its moments…..and scared them to death in the process. At her audition for the band, after being asked to join, she made them audition for her. Who Knows Where the Time Goes? is her staggering pinnacle, a song so achingly pretty and wise that it stops you in your tracks. The melody is simply gorgeous, and was later cribbed for “Sweet Melissa” by the Allman Brothers, although the Allman Brother bros get REALLY mad at me when I point this out.
