Super Bowl Sunday is the one day a year Americans put all their other differences aside and argue exclusively about the halftime show. For many of us (Steeler fans like me, for instance), the game is secondary. The commercials, once something to look forward to, have become instantly forgettable. That leaves the spectacle itself. The hype. The pop-culture aspect of it all. And as the NFL is desperate to maintain street cred, while at the same time being terrified of pissing off the Miller Lite MAGA goobers who make up a large chunk of their audience, the tug of war is often fascinating to watch. So you have things like the “End Racism” message in NFL end zones removed the same day President Trump informs the world that he’ll be attending the game, while the game itself is being played in front of 98% rich white people in a city dominated by African American culture and African American poverty.
