Getting older is realizing that all the things that used to matter don’t matter much anymore. The people in our past burn bright, and then flicker, and then fade away. Everything gets simplified. Cut. Cut. Cut. Eventually it’s selected family and a few good friends. Your health. Your ability to work just hard enough to prevent the bank from taking your shit. That’s about it. Sprinkle in a warm bed and a reliable internet connection, and you feel like a 1% er. Because you are. You don’t need much more. Fries are good without gravy, too.

It’s feeling like we need the gravy that gets us into trouble.
