Memorial Day.
It's not really for them. They are not here anymore. Nobody can ask them what they think about anything anymore.
It's for us.
And they didn't give their lives. They fully intended to live, thank you very much. Their lives were taken from them. They knew the stakes. They knew it was possible. Some of them saw it coming. Most did not. The madness of war is unrelenting. It seeks and it destroys. And often it takes the best among us.
Some of us reflect on what the day means. Most just enjoy a 3 day weekend. The fog of war has been replaced with the smell of burgers on the grill.
I don’t know a single patriot who ever declared himself one.
