All I knew of pandemics was from history books....mostly the "Spanish Flu" pandemic of 1918. I studied it for a play I wrote 20 years ago.....and while the subject was terrifying, it was terrifying the same way Nazis were terrifying....in a "at least we don't have to worry about this anymore" kind of way. We're used to feeling secure in our own security.....where all the barbarism and unchecked viruses of the past have been eradicated simply because we're smarter and more enlightened now than people were then. We're somehow better.
